It's a Wrap for the 2022 Waikiki 株塾 Cup!

CoCo Vandeweghe and Mackenzie McDonald take home the championship titles.

It was a great sunny day in Waikiki at the Ft. DeRussy Recreation Center for the 2022 Waikiki 株塾 Cup! All matches that were originally scheduled for Sunday, December 18, were held on Saturday, December 17, due to the weather forecast of heavy rain all day Sunday. The forecast turned out to be accurate, so we are glad we took the advice of local weather experts!

The first match was Women’s Singles with Coco Vandeweghe and Claire Liu. Liu took the first set, but Vandeweghe came back in a thrilling 10-point tiebreak set to win 4-6, 6-4, 11-9.

After the Women’s match, it was time for Mixed Doubles which Claire Liu partnered with Mackenzie McDonald and Coco Vandeweghe partnered with Jenson Brooksby. Kei Nishikori was unable to play due to injury but served as the guest chair umpire. It was very entertaining for all fans as Kei was giving the players advice and making calls. The Mixed Doubles went for one set, due to time constraints with allotted TV time and daylight hours. Claire Liu and Mackenzie McDonald defeated CoCo Vandeweghe and Jenson Brooksby 7-5.

The Men’s Singles match followed with Jenson Brooksby and Mackenzie McDonald. It was a competitive match with Mackenzie winning both sets, 6-4, 6-2 win over Jenson Brooksby.

Fans were able to enjoy food and beverage in the stands provided in part by Aloha Beer Co. and take breaks from the sun under a large tent. Beer, wine, assorted beverages, pizza, and kalua pork sandwiches were all-you-can-eat (and drink!).

We were so happy to host everyone for the 2022 Waikiki 株塾 Cup! We are very excited for next year. We hope everyone has a Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year. Mahalo to our fans, sponsors, and wonderful volunteers for making this event a success.
